I almost hate to say it, but this "Big Box" has some nice flyrods for amazingly cheap prices. They are made in Korea, China, Singapore, etc, but they are pretty nice rods for less than $100. They also sell Sage Scotts, St.Croix, Loomis, etc. But if you are looking for a really nice casting rod that Cabela's will stand behind, you may want to go look at their rods.
I prefer to buy from the smaller shop that is hungry and has information and techniques to share. I think Cabela's is going to a Wal-Mart mentality, and am willing to spend a few extra bucks- actually double or triple the bucks- for the service and in support of the smaller guy.
Your original question, good small stream rod. I've got a Sage 7'9" 3wt that just seems to really fit me. It is great on Michigan's small to medium rivers, and a pleasure to fish all day. I fish it mostly with a 4wt DT floating line. Also a 3wt WF. This rod is a few years old-like 10-12- so you may not find it being made now, or things may have changed.
I've got a few 4 and 5wts that fish fine, but don't have any real affection for them, so can't recommend.
St. Croix has a great reputation for well made balanced rods. Think I'd start looking there. Check your local flyshop! Often they have some rods that they are proud of carrying.
And then sometimes, it is just worth popping for a Winston! Someday I'd like to check one out!
