Step number one was "Where will I store it?" We live in an apartment, and there is some storage in the basement, but ... I settled for a breaker bar.
There seems to be two main factors to consider:
1--the size of the tank
2--psi output
#1--like goadee said, the bigger tank is nice, because you have a lot less noise. I've borrowed compressors to use, and the work environment is so much better when the compressor isn't running all the time--it's worth it to me.
#2--I've never been able to get a recommendation on what psi is recommended for mechanics air tools. Store clerks seem to just look at the box and point "it says here you can use it for car repairs". I'd be interested in what folks say on this one.
One other factor: WHEELS! Get one with wheels on it! You will want to move this thing around, especially if you end up using it for stuff other than car repair. Of course, other option is a really long air hose.
Good luck--hope this helps.
