This is my first experience with a TiVo, so I can't really compare it to any other TiVo. However, I can compare the DirecTV tuner built-into the TiVo box to my old RCA DirecTV tuner.
I've only been using it for two days, but I'm already disappointed a bit with some of the functionality I've lost. My RCA tuner was about 5 years old and was free when I got DirecTV. It's a dual-LNB system.
One thing I really liked with the RCA was the ability to set "profiles". My wife had one which included only channels she watches (like SoapNet, Oxygen, Lifetime, etc.), I had one which included stuff I watch (like Speed, ESPN, etc), and my kids had a profile for stuff they watch (Cartoon Network, Nick, etc.). So whenever I watch DirecTV I switch over to my profile and when I hit the channel up or down button it only cycles through the channels I like. Well, this DirecTV TiVo box doesn't have this functionality. You can set one global profile which skips all the stations nobody in your household watches or subscribes to, but you have to basically mesh all the stations everyone in your house watches together in one big "profile" (called "channels I receive"). So when I'm scrolling I have to go through all the HGTV and Oxygen stuff to get to the ESPN and Speed stuff. I just think that when you buy something that's YEARS newer than something it's replacing you shouldn't LOSE functionality. Also the remote's a pain. It's not very intuitive. I've got an Electronics degree. I shouldn't have to open the manual to figure out how to do something.
The TiVo's pretty neat. I'm having fun with that, but I just miss my old RCA tuner. Hopefully when DirecTV comes out with their own branded box later this year they'll add back in this technology.
