A company in California (Zap! Autos) has begun to federalize the Smart City-Coupe (Fortwo)gasoline version for sale in the USA. Zap! is actually buying used Smarts in Europe, then making the necessary emission, lighting, and instrumentation changes and to be able to sell them in the USA.
In my opinion, DaimlerChrysler has missed the boat on selling the vehicles in the USA; many people here would buy them as a sensible vehicle for use around town. The vehicles have an adequate crash structure to meet US crash tests; it's merely the lighting and emissions that the Euro-spec Smarts don't meet.
Smart City-Coupes began being sold in Canada last fall in diesel form, being sold through select Mercedes dealers. I saw one of those Canadian ones here in Washington State last fall, a couple from Vancouver was on a road trip in their new Smart and was loving it; the car can cruise at 80 MPH and they were getting around 60 MPG.
According to the automotive press, DaimlerChrysler loses money on every ForTwo they sell worldwide, because of disadvantageous deals they made with suppliers and unions; they are actually considering ceasing production of the ForTwo. That would be a shame in my opinion.
