Check Engine Light (Nissan)

I have a friend with a Nissan Frontier truck that's about 6-months old. Her check engine light came on, and she took it to the Nissan dealer.
The dealer told her that most often when this happens on a new vehicle, the problem is a loose gas cap. The dealer said that if it was a loose gas cap, it will cost her $90 to reset the computer, and it isn't covered by the warranty (because it wasn't a defect in a part or manufacture.)
Does this make sense? Won't the computer simply reset itself?
The dealer is keeping her truck for a few hours until they can hook it up to the computer to see why the check engine light came on. If it turns out that the problem was a loose gas cap, they will ask for her verbal authorization before resetting the computer for $90.
I suggested to her that she tell them not to do anything, and then see if the check engine light goes out on its own. Did her give her proper advice? Or should she spend the $90?
Thanks.
