I had a job about 10 years ago supervising juvenile delinquents who had court-ordered community service. The agency I worked for found things for them to do, often trying to teach them some skills in the process. We fixed up fire-damaged houses, performed litter pickup on PA highways, and rebuilt a baseball field (built dugouts, snack bar, and press box) in a poor neighborhood. I still drive by on occasion to check on the field, and it appears that a league is still using it!
When we did litter pickup along the highways, here's what we found most often:
1--cigarette packs and butts (however, we didn't pick up butts--they are too small and supposedly decompose fairly quickly).
2--tire pieces. As in rubber chunks and entire belts from radial tires. More than likely, almost all came from trucks.
3--fast food containers/bags
4--plastic soda bottles with a yellow liquid in them ... I am not kidding!
5--more tire pieces. Really, there were a LOT of them lying around.
Some of the more interesting things we found were shoes, plywood, a mattress, and a washing machine.
Littering is simply irresponsible, no matter what it is.
