also known as voice over internet protocol. We got rid of Verizon (land line phone) last October, and use our phone over the cable modem internet service. We use a company called Lingo.com (same type of service and Vonage). We went with them because they offer excellent international calling rates (my wife is Nigerian). Our monthly bill has never been more than $40, even with calls to Nigeria (and US/Canada long distance calls are free).
There has been a few technical glitches, but their customer service is speedy and things have all been resolved the same day. I was recently talking to my dad about the service, and he was impressed, because he hadn't noticed any problems at all from when we talk on the phone.
Lingo.com works for us. (and I have a cell phone through work for any emergencies that come up)
