Voice of experience from three overseas transfers since 1982 (all US to Hong Kong)--- If it is a corporate transfer, he or she should check with their HR. Mine (three different bank employers) usually subsidised disposition of up to two cars. If owned, they reimbursed the difference between wholesale and retail, assuming you (as I did) had to dump cars at wholesale on short notice. For leased cars, they reimbursed "reasonable" costs to terminate the lease early.
