Most were junk but the last one I bought seems pretty nice. Its a Excel from Home Depot with a Honda OHC (really! over head cam!) engine. Its something like 2600 PSI, enough for any homeowner. $400 or so.
I've found with pressure washers, the first thing to break is the pump. Avoid the ones with the pump under the engine (vertical shaft engine). Get a pressure washer with a horizontal shaft engine and pump in front of it. I've found those pumps to be much better quality.
I've had two Craftsman pressure washers. Both total crap. The first one was okay, but something broke in the pump (vertical shaft type), and Sears actually lost the pressure washer while they had it for service. They gave me a brand new one (vertical shaft type again). After 15 hours, this thing sounded terrible. The pump was leaking where the case halfs met, and the motor had a bunch of bolts that worked loose. It was really just a turd.
The next one I had was a "Generic brand" from Home Depot. It lasted about 2 years. It actually still works, but something is wrong with the coil on the engine. It has weak spark. I'm sure its a $40 or so fix, but the hose was getting worn out, and it just didn't run as well as it used to so I bought the Honda powered one.
The new one seems really good, but only time will tell. I actually take decent care of these things. The cheap ones just seem kinda "disposable".
I've also borrowed my friends Karcher (sp?). IT seemed very well built. It needed something fixed in the pump after 2 years.
If I were just using the pressure washer to clean off moss and wash cars, I'd get an electric one. They are under $100 and make decent power.
