I routinely drive between Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR, and I typically take my own car. Either of our cars are comfortable, and much safer than the typical "Chevy Classic or similar" specified in our corporate travel policy. I typically drive my own car and get reimbursed (this year at $0.405/mile), though I hate putting so many miles on my personal car. It makes more sense to drive our 9-5 rather than V70, as the 9-5 gets about 8 MPG better than the V70.
When I fly to destinations for work, I'm stuck renting the POS specified by our corporate travel policy. But when I fly someplace on personal vacation, I'll rent a safer, more sporty car, typically a Volvo or Jaguar from the Hertz prestige collection. I think my safety is too important to scrimp by renting less safe cars. Unfortunately my employer doesn't agree.
