OT home wireless network setup questions (win/mac)

Hopefully someone on here can help me out. It can't be that hard of a problem. I have a DSL modem at home attached to my windows desktop via ethernet. I also recently purchased a mac powerbook so would now like to connect the mac to the internet wirelessly for use in the house. I was planning on buying a mac airport express and plugging it into the DSL modem since it has 4 ethernet ports and I assume it can also function as a router. The airport express is on the way, but I tried plugging the notebook in via ethernet to see if it worked, but since I have only one IP, I can't get both to work at the same time. When I unplug the line to the desktop, the mac works, but when both are plugged in only the first one works.
Here's the problem. I'm in Spain with the military, and I bought the modem as a passdown from someone leaving. All the documentation is in Spanish, along with the configuration software on the desktop. When it was installed I had a telefonica rep come to the house to set everything up. I tried to run the configuration software to set it up to run two computers, but I don't think it worked properly.
Do I need to call telefonica back or can I do this myself? Is there something inside of win XP or mac os X that can help me connect or does it have to happen at the ISP. It's also possible I don't even have a router, but then why would a DSL modem have 4 ethernet ports if it wasn't intended to be used for multiple computers?
