I hope you're able to give her a proper debriefing on the issue. It is correct that superchargers are typically belt driven, but I've heard of gear driven, also. Thus, mechanically-driven would be the proper term. Superchargers are not always pressurizing the intake manifold, only at higher rpm. For example, one would not design a supercharger system that pressurizes the intake at 800 rpm. They have less lag because the induction volume after the impeller blades is shorter, as well as because you get instant impeller speed when you go to a higher rpm. So if you downshift, the impeller is instantly spinning faster. Contrast that with a turbo, where you downshift and step on it, then you produce more exhaust gas volume, which brings the turbo to a higher speed, then there's a longer pipe to the intake manifold. That's turbo lag, generally about 1 second.
Since I can't stop typing, I'll also add that Saab's variable compression engine is supercharged and intercooled. The supercharger sits up on top of the engine, and it's a very short distance to the intercooler, and a short distance yet to the intake manifold. I hope we get to see it some day.
