My point was to show that while merchants typcially ENCOURAGE debit cards (because it costs them less than a credit card transaction), banks (or other financial institutions) have a way of increasing CREDIT-type transactions. Presumably, my bank does this to decrease their costs in processing the transactions.
Yes, the nickel comes from somewhere, but can you really blame me (the saavy consumer :-) for getting a little extra every month? Especially when:
1--there is no penalty/disadvantage at the register when I use my credit card
2--I see credit transactions "safer" than debit transactions. It's pretty easy to get someone's PIN number (try it next time at the register--most folks are very careless!), but the signature required for a credit transaction is a skill that has to be duplicated at every transaction.
Just my $0.02--
