My first IBM-style PC (1982) had 128k of RAm, two 5.25" floppies and no hard drive. The software (Visicalc, XyWrite) ran from the floppy in A and the data went to the floppy in B. Floppies held IIRC 160kb of data. My second (in 1986) was an AT 286 with 512k of memory, two 5.25' floppy drives and (gasp!) a 30mb Hard drive. Also had a 4-color monitor instead of amber monochrome.
But, yes, stuff all the memory in there you can get. Just make sure which sticks the laptop has to make up the 256mb - 2x128 and no empty socket or 1x256 and one empty socket.
