I'm sorry to hear of your dad's condition. Hopefully our advice can help you make a good decision.
Contrary to Brian_in_MA's assertion, the Sharper Image units do circulate air pretty well. The Ionic Breeze moves air electrostatically, and if you put your hand behind it you can feel the air being sucked through. I have bad allergies and they have made a noticeable difference, but I do need to have one in each room of the house. I use a smaller unit in my bedroom, a large one in the living room, a tiny plug-in one for the bathroom, and a large one in the kitchen/dining area. The cost did add up.
In my old house we had an electronic electrostatic filter that was built into our furnace. You could take it out and run it through the dishwasher to clean it. That worked pretty well too... maybe better than the Ionic Breeze units but understandably more expensive. Over the years it kinda wore out.
Anyway, a good person to consult on this would actually be your father's doctor, or an allergist. It will be expensive probably, but (obviously) worth it. Best of luck and I'll keep your family in my thoughts.
