Michigan's Treasury Dept is unbelieveable!... My son lived in FL for nearly two years without interruption during his Jr and Sr Under-grad years. He worked part-time jobs in the Miami area and returned to MI only for short (less than one week) periods around holiday times. The State of Michigan demanded income tax for the money he earned in FL during this time claiming his "permanent address of record" was still in MI.
He returned to MI for one year between Under-grad and Law School, again working nearly 40 hours per week at a part-time job. This year he completed his MI tax forms as a part-year resident and got another shocker! He had to pro-rate the standard deduction on his taxes although all income was subject subject to full taxation!
Is it any wonder why Michigan's population is dropping like a rock? No new jobs, lousy weather, excessive taxation.
