A straight piece of wire should work fine for FM stereo. Keeping it tight, try various directions. It should be an even fraction of the wavelength (1/4, 1/2) of the radio stations' frequencies. (So a 20' wire won't do any better than a 4' wire.) Avoid running it parallel to power wires.
The rods on a TV antenna are just a row of conductive elements tuned to the frequencies of the TV channels. Twice as many elements means 3db more signal, 4x means 6db more signal, etc... Aiming the antenna is the act of putting the rods perpendicular to the direction to the transmitter site.
