I used to manage a Sears Home Improvement department and my store sold so many Kohler powered tractors that we rated a tour of their facility in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
Kohler engines have a pressurized oil system and an oil filter. This makes sure the engine internals are well-lubricated. Most other engines are splash-lubricated. Splashing is fine for level surfaces, but if you have hills, a pressurized system is, IMHO, more reliable.
I don't know if B&S has caught up, but for my money, I'd buy a Kohler.
