This is like a remake of an old movie... GM today is acting just like it did in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Many of the "new" models are really restyled versions of old platforms, and "badgeineering" is increasingly all that differentiates the models sold by its various U.S. divisions.
In addition, with the exception of the GTO, GM refuses import or build in the U.S. cars that it already builds (various Opel and Holden models) that -- while not the equal to products from Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Mazda, Subaru etc -- come a hell of a lot closer than the Malibu, Cobalt, G6, etc. The exterior design of the Malibu Maxx is enough to cause retinal damage (not quite as bad as the Pontiac Aztek, but close) and the interior evokes memories of the Chevrolet Citation.
GM certainly CAN compete... just look at the Holden and Opel websites(http://www.holden.com.au and http://www.opel.com) and the new models Cadillac has introduced. And just look at the new models from Daimler Chrysler (300 and Magnum Wagon) and Ford (500 and Mustang). They are not perfect, but at least they aren't a bad joke.
