Are you trying to consolidate JUST student loans, or a student loan AND some other loan from Wachovia? Or was Wachovia just the lender for the student loans?
MI-Roger is right--typically are STILL beating down my door about consolidation because they see two loans. Unfortunately, one is my name, and one is in my father's name (PLUS loan) so they can't be consolidated together.
However, if the Wachovia loan is a student loan, there should be no reason why you can't consolidate it with the Direct Loans one. Wachovia just doens't want to lose out on all of those interest payments you would've been making for the next 20 years :-)
I recently re-consolidated (actually, more like refinanced) my student loans with American Student Loan Services. They have some pretty good interest rates, as well as on-time payment incentives (1% reduction after 36 on-time payments, etc.). Customer service was quick and excellent, although it takes 4-10 weeks after your application is processed to get things rolling.
Good luck.
