I'd be asking the warranty people that question!
Of course there's always the old "process of elimination"...
Is it part of the
...brakes? Nope.
...suspension? Nope.
...steering? Nope.
...body? Nope.
...interior? Nope.
...stereo? Obviously not.
I think you get the idea ;^)
I'd certainly consider it part of the engine. For what it's worth, the EPA does too, for purposes of emission-control warranty.
First thing I'd do is get on the horn with your mechanic *now* and see if the old engine is still around, if it is make sure he hangs onto it.
Then contact Saab Cars USA and try to find out what's necessary to file (and support) a claim under the extended warranty.
