Friday, fellow Saabnet poster Drew and I spent half a day at the GM Auto Show in Motion. GM rented most of the Reliant Stadium parking lot, hauled in a bunch of GM and competitors' cars, set up tracks marked by orange cones, and turned us all loose.

It was a lot of fun! The Corvette course was not as long or fast as last year, but you only get to drive the Corvette (or alternatively, Caddy CTS-V) twice anyway. The other courses seemed better to me than last year, and the attendants were letting us drive the cars fairly aggressively.

A few observations:

The selection of non-GM cars seemed a bit more sparse than last year.

To me (acknowledging my bias), the 9-3 and 9-5 stack up pretty well with their targeted competition, especially considering price. To me, the 9-2X doesn't feel like a real Saab, but to each his own.

Pontiac GTO seems like a pretty awesome car to me, especially given the deals that can be negotiated. I'd consider one if I weren't driving 100 miles a day.

The Saturn Ion Redline was a quick little car with its supercharged 4-banger making 205 HP from, I believe, 2 liters. I could own one. The comparable Chevy Cobalt SS is too garish for me.

In exchange for your name and email address, GM will buy your lunch, give you a free T-shirt, and let you drive a lot of cars in a short period of time. To see if they will be in your town, go to autoshowinmotion.com
