Several studies show that motorsports gives a lot of credibility to the manufacturers. Audi has proven that over and over with its dominance at Le Mans, DTM in Germany, and in the Speed Touring Car series in the US. Honda built a significant part of its image for excellence in racing through F-1, CART, Touring Cars in Europe and motorcycles. Saab built its early reputation in rally, but Saab has changed and so has rally. WRC uses cars that would be considered entry level in the US market, cars like the Subaru Impreza and the Ford Focus. Granted the production models they are required to produce, the Imprezza WRX STi and the Ford Focus RS, are not exactly entry level. Saab would be better to follow the lead of Audi, Cadillac and others by competing with factory backing in the various touring car series worldwide. Racing would help establish an identity for Saab that they have been missing. There is something to be said for "win on Sunday, sell on Monday."
