96 Saab 900s Clutch Cable Replacement Problem

This job was going very well. I used the original Saab Part No. 4901724. It's self adjusting. The last part of the replacement was using a pry bar to move the clutch lever towards the firewall so that I could snap the cable end/pivot block into position on the lever. I was able to do this, however because the cable was so short I had to move the clutch lever back so far it's as if I have the clutch pedal pushed in. The clutch will not engage. Have I completely missed something? Do I have a bigger problem? Please reply.
