I can't help you on the money part except to say that unless you're getting more interest in the savings account than you're paying for the interest, you'd be better putting the money down.
One thing I can say is that I owned a 2002 Forrester and it was an OK vehicle, but if you like driving, there's no comparison to the 93. Another stealth hauler that I owned was a '95 Toyota Celica, fun to drive and could haul WAY more than it looked like. Another two cars I owned, a WRX wagon and a 9-2x Aero were a blast to drive and could pack a LOT, a used 2002 WRX (first year they were made) could probably be had for mid teens. Unless you're looking at new car prices, the 9-2x Aero is out of the price range.
Too bad about the totaled car, good luck finding the replacement.
