I live in Falls Church/Fairfax County. We have a number of new employees in my office and they have located to West Virginia and take the MARC train from Harpers Ferry. One has a no principal loan on his newly built house since he is staying under 5 years and knows he will turnj a big profit. His house has gone up 80K in 8 months. IF you can take the train to DC that is an option. I would NOT recommend driving it. Locating near a Metro train stop is a good 20% premium on real estate, but worth it. Do not let a realator tell you it is close to Metro when it is close to a bus stop. It is NOT the same. they are slow, and turn a 30 minute car drive into a 1.5 hour bus/train transfer morass.
I prefer much prefer Virginia, cheaper sales tax and real estate taxes, but getting in a desirable school district location will cost with housing prices. It is a nice area with lots to do.
One aggravation is traffic on the weekend... at least people know where they work and drive to get there. Weekends can be total pokey gridlock on I-95 (the highway from hell) and I-66.
