I agree that a bobcat may be a better option, they are smaller and more manuable and they can accept other accessories that a skid loader may not have. However, try out several things and see what you like. When you are ready to buy, be sure to run the used machine just like a test drive. Be sure to exercise all of the functions of the equipment and then check for hydraulic leaks. Check all hoses, fittings, cylinders and the pump if you can see them. If not look under it and see if you can see any seepage. If at all possible, try to make a lift under load and listen carefully for any strange noises such as a squeeling pump and the like, especially if you are considering buying a used rental piece. People tend to treat rentals with less care than they would if they had their own equipment.
Years ago, my Father and I ran a business with a small dozer and backhoe and I can tell you that hydraulic repairs are not cheap, so be sure to check out the hydrualics as carefully as you can. Also, inspect the pivot points on the loader and look for stress cracks/welds. Buying a used piece of heavy equipment is different from buying a car as they are usually all worked hard and long hours before they are sold, so just inspect carefully and good luck!
