Hello everyone and thanks for the great advice on SKYPE!!

Background:

After moving into my new house, I found myself searching for a high quality, and inexpensive long distance phone service.

“Free” long distance (in the USA) is a standard item with most well known cell phone carriers and their respective monthly programs, but my needs required a long distance carrier to Europe. How was I going to achieve this?

At first, I thought I’d have to sign up for a “wired” home phone, and use something like a “10-10-something” to get inexpensive calls. But checking the monthly rates of ~ $25.00 just for the “local Ma Bell” line, plus taxes, plus the 10-10- etc rates quickly crossed $30 bucks a month.

During March Madness, I saw a TV ad for Vonage. Cheap long distance to USA and Canada, but still $ 25.00 a month, a contract requirement, and no European long distance service at the present time.

But the thought of calling long distance cheaply using my computer appealed to me.

All I needed was a pc, a DSL or a broadband (cable) connection, and headphones with a microphone.

Through a SAAB contact, I was directed to a service called “Skype”. FREE telephone calls pc-to-pc, and very cheap calls pc to a land line (about 2 cents a minute from my pc to Sweden, for example).

All the details can be found at:

http://www.skype.com

I downloaded the free software ,(no pop up ads, no spyware, no malware) and installed it on my pc. I ordered a headset from a well known e-tailer.

I am just thrilled to tell you all how terrific this has worked. I made 2 calls to my friends in Sweden yesterday, and the clarity was outstanding. The total conversations (of approx. 30 minutes) cost less than 30 cents !!

Hope all of you take the time to check this out, install this on your respective pc’s, and enjoy the savings.
