In the past, they decided to create their own CDMA chipset rather than use the industry standard set from Qualcomm. Since the vast majority of the world market is GSM, they were apparently comfortable with their decision. Not sure if they ever changed, so many other (better) products out there that I lost track.
They are supposedly coming out with several flip phones imminently - they have to keep up with market demand.
