Ford will recommend new tires every 6 years, even if there is plenty of tread left. For Saab drivers, this is usually not an issue because our tires don't last 6 years.

If this advice is heeded, there is no need for tires with extremely little treadwear (high treadwear number on the sidewall). Instead, you can use a higher performance tire with less guilt.

The article also recommends changing of the spare tire at 6 years. I have never done that. Maybe keeping it in a bag with reduce the ozone exposure and make it last longer. Either that or you can ignore the advice and not drive on a spare longer than 2 days or so.
