How big an area to mow? Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Tue, 24 May 2005 13:13:19 In Reply to: where to find info on self propelled mowers, Tarheel, Mon, 23 May 2005 12:21:34 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
As to places to look, epinons.com and Amazon.com have lots of personal reviews.
How big an area do you have to mow, and how often? What other things do you want/need to do (plow, tow a tiller, etc.)?
There are walk-behind self-propelled mowers and ride-on mowers. Walk-behinds will pull themselves along, but you still have to walk, and guide it. I've got 3/4 of an acre, and I'd never consider a walk-behind. I'd walk near 3 miles to mow the lawn with a walk-behind. Now, they have some pretty massive commercial walk-behinds, but those can be an issue if you have a lot of small areas to cut into or avoid.
Remember, figure out the area to mow, and then figure out the mowing width. Divide the area (in square feet) by mowing width (in feet, not inches!)and you'll get the distance to walk. Multiply that by at least 10%, because you'll always have some overlap.
Riders break down into two main groups - stand on and sit on. Stand-ons are pretty heavy-duty commercial units. They look like fun, but scary. And I'll bet they're pretty expensive.
Ride-ons are tractors or non-tractors. Tractors are neat, and some add stuff like plowing and towing tillers, areators, etc. Expect to pay a lot more. A decent 8 hp simple sit on non-tractor will cost around $1K-$1.2K. I've got an old (>15 year old) 8 hp Toro, and it works just fine for my flat .75 acre. It is far from commercial.
