When my wife leased her new 2002 9-5, we thought about giving her cream puff and extra clean 1993 Volvo 850GLT with 98k miles to our younger son (then 19). But we were put off by the way he kept his old Saturn beater -- full of dead burger bags, cigarette boxes, ashes, dirty clothes, and general lahp-sahp (as we call trash in our family's second language - Cantonese). That persuaded us to sell the Volvo to the mom of one of his friends instead. We decided we couldn't bear to see it desecrated, I suppose. A year ago, when I moved from my "Old Blue" '96 900SET into the now-departed Grey Goose 2004 9-5 Aero, the younger son had cleaned up his act significantly due to having a steady girlfriend who had told him the inside of his Saturn looked and smelled like a trashcan. So he inherited Old Blue and it is still looking good, and kept fairly clean these days. The Saturn beater went to #1 son, now almost 30, who still subscribes to the rolling trash-can school of car cleanliness. Win some, lose some.
