Most likely "must be installed in sets of 1" refers to the fact that you do not have to install them as pairs. Any modern laptop will use 32-bit SODIMMs which means you need only add one at a time on a P4-architecture system. The quote is probably "default" language from earlier systems, where adding memory in groups was required.
What you need to find out is how many slots the laptop has. Many smaller laptops (like VAIOs) only have one SODIMM slot. Often times there is onboard memory (256m) and one slot for expansion, but SOME laptops have one slot which is used by the factory-installed memory, so you must remove it and replace it with something larger to add more RAM.
Check the owner's manual - there should be a section on upgrading RAM. Chances are it's a little door in the bottom of the chassis.
