Installed in 1987, re-built in 2004...... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Mon, 20 Jun 2005 16:16:42 In Reply to: Inground pool, johnf, Mon, 20 Jun 2005 10:24:48 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My original install was quite a while ago so I won't go into details, other than to say our pool is a 14x28 kidney, also steel walls w/ vinyl liner. What we learned last year however, could be valuable.
Both kids had grown up and moved out (for the most part) and they used the pool much more than the wife and I ever did when they were younger. We requested quotes from a variety of companies targeted to two different goals. One group of quotes was to remove the pool, fill the hole, and restore the yard. The other group was for the cost to rebuild the pool; new liner, new coping, new concrete decking. We discovered it was considerably less expensive to re-build the pool than to remove it, approx $6,000 versus $8,000.
The pool does add value to the home even though we seldom use it. I felt it made more sense to spend less money and maintain the market value of our home, than to spend more money and have the value drop slightly. However, having a pool will scare away some prospective buyers when you decide to sell your home. Most sources say a pool will only add 35% of its cost to the home's value, and that is for the buyers who want a pool.
So, we now have a re-built pool, good for another 15 to 20 years before major maintenance costs. Moral of this story is that an inground pool is a commitment for life - either your life, or the life of your residency in the home.
