There is a free short tour of the Loop on the El Train on Saturdays. You have to register for the free tickets at a tourist board office in the downtown. Then you get a free narrated tour of the buildings that you can see from the train. See info below from:

Loop Tour Train
The Chicago Transit Authority elevated trains offer a unique vantage point for seeing the internationally renowned architecture in the heart of Chicago's business district. Learn the history of the 130-year old downtown area and the elevated train system, and see Chicago’s buildings from a new perspective. The Loop Tour Train is made possible through a partnership of CAF, the Chicago Transit Authority and the Chicago Office of Tourism.
May – September, 2005
Saturday at 11:00am, 11:40am, 12:20pm, 1:00pm
Meet: Directions for boarding the train will be provided at the Chicago Office of Tourism Visitor Information Center on the first floor of the Chicago Cultural Center, 77 E. Randolph.
Cost:
Everyone FREE
Cost Notes: Tickets must be obtained in advance on the day of the tour at the Chicago Office of Tourism Visitor Information Center on the first floor of the Chicago Cultural Center, 77 E. Randolph. No advance registration is available for this tour.
Duration: 40 minutes
