Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland and/or MoTown Museum in Detroit. The Henry Ford Museum is actually in Dearborn (~15 miles west of Detroit) and the building is copied from Philadelphia's Independence Hall. The Museum houses what Henry Ford thought was important artifacts to remember about American household life, primarily from the mid-1800's to the mid-1900's. There is also his automobile collection in the same building.
Next to the Museum is Greenfield Village which is a collection of important historical buldings - mostly from the Mid-West area, arranged in a town configuration. The Wright Brother's bicycle shopis there as are old homes with a historical connection, Edison's Laboratory and the Tripp Sawmill which was owned by my ancestors!!
Friday July 8th is also the date for Ann Arbor's annual "Rolling Sculture Car Show", only 20 miles further west of the Dearborn Museums on I-94. The entire downtown is used for this late afternoon/evening car show with entries in almost every category. Expensive collector cars (Tom Monaghan's Duesenberg collection is located in Ann Arbor too), street rods, antique autos, restored classics, competition cars and the just plain weird (it is Ann Arbor remember). For a Fire Truck museum go back East 5 miles to Ypsilanti (my home town).
Just some additional ideas. Enjoy your trip, I will probably be walking the streets and looking at the cars in the Rolling Sculpture show Friday evening.
