When to call it quits and get rid of a car

Like many on the BB I support using a car until it is all used up. In fact, since I have been driving I have never gotten rid of a car yet. I kept them all going and other family members and I use them. Question is how do you determine the end of the road since a car can almost always be fixed for a price. I have a ’96 Monte Carlo with 146K that needs some sort of engine work. Mechanic is not sure until he starts pulling things apart. There is a slight knock which he thinks might be a piston in which case it needs a new/rebuilt engine. Only about 25lbs compression on one cylinder…could be anywhere from 600-3500 to fix depending. The car ran well otherwise with the exception of little things that wore out. There has been a slight tranny issue that is intermittent but may mean the tranny is on its way out too. So do I just keep spending or trade it on something like a 9-2x? Any problem trading a car with the check engine light on. Can I expect next to nothing on trade. Edmunds puts trade at about $1,100. Think I could get $2,000?
