Most likely it will take you less than $50.
You mentioned that you already have a laptop wireless card - try to figure out which wireless standard it operates on; wireless comes in several different flavors. Currently, there's A, B, and G. A seems to be used more in business applications, B and G are popular in the consumer market. G, although faster and newer, is backwards compatible with B. There are new standards coming out as well, although you will find prices for those are still fairly high.
Your first step would probably be to read up on basic wireless networking and buy an appropriate wireless router (very good wireless G routers can be had for under $50). Don't forget to implement some security when you set up the network, too.
Check out this handy cNet wireless networking buyer's guide. Good luck!
