I think that if someone is trading in or deciding not to buy a SUV because of gas prices that they won't buy a sedan getting 22 MPG. I agree that they won't go to a Civic hybrid either. However, even the 9-3SS gets 30 MPG highway. Anyway, there are other options, such as the Toyota Highlander Hybrid and other hybrid SUV's. Example, the average MPG for Hybrid SUV's is 34 City and 29 Highway and the average MPG for similar sized non-hybrid SUV's is 16 City and 22.5 Highway. If we average the mileages together for both groups, hybrid SUV's get 31.5 MPG and non-hybrid SUV's get 19.25 MPG for an average difference of 12.25 MPG. If you assume a 36 month lease at 12,000 miles/year the the cost of gas (figure $3.00/gallon because it has to be a higher price to make the decision to switch over) then you're looking at a savings of $3,200 over three years. It's not a huge amount of money considering the packeges you mentioned, but add into that the fact that they wouldn't lose any convenience of a SUV and still get the savings. Plus, some of the SUV owners may want to conserve natural resources thus allowing their conscience to push them in the direction of a more fuel efficient vehicle. Demise of the SUV? I don't think so. But sales are down this year.
