The round silver dollar gap tools are fine for standard plugs, but for the iridium or platinum plugs you should use a gauge that has a set of wires of different diameters. The wires are passed through the gap in increasing size until the actual gap is determined. Typically, this is a folding type tool that also has a flat piece of metal with a slot cut in the side. You place the ground electrode in the slot well away from the tip and bend the electrode in and out as needed. Any other system that involves wedging something between the small iridium point and the ground will damage the point.
Most garages don't set the gap before putting in the high priced plugs. They just assume that the gap is correct from the factory.
