These are strange beasties. Many have conductive plastic elements. These are very comment, even in high end gear. But wire wound can sound more revealing.
A log type is what you have. Do not have any idea what 'D' would be.
If you want to replace with something else, you can use almost anything that will fit and if not compatable with an old one that mounted direct to a PCB, you can just add flying leads from the PCB to the pot.
I yanked my balance control and volume pots, and replaced with two 10 turn wire wound mono pots, and ganged the two knobs with monofilament to make the two mono pots operate together. So there is one pot for L and one for R and the balance has been lost. Sounds much better, but probably no great advantage unless other mods are made and other stuff is high-end or otherwise very modified/transparent/revealing.
Nothing wrong with taking one apart for cleaning if it will allow. If result suxs, you still have the option of putting something different in.
