ones work. My wireless DSL router at home is on the ground floor where most computers sit. My computer is in the basement. I had marginal reception using the stock antenna in the basement due to a couple of brick walls and steel beams in the house. I got a *directional* antenna (a Hawking 15db antenna) for my access point in the basement and the signal is quite acceptable.
If you need to boost the signal in a particular direction, the directional antenna would be a good bet. If you need to boost signal in all direction, then you have to do something about the transmitter source and a good high gain omni-directional antenna.
Antenna placement is very important, try relocate your transmitter/receiver, you would be surprised how much things can change by moving a few feet either way (up, down and sideways).
Buy one from a store and see if it works, you can return it if it doesn't work out.
