A big word of caution

If your lawn is mostly crabgrass I can assume that the good grass is not thick and lush. This is a chicken or egg problem. Putting crabgrass control down when your lawn is sparse will just keep your lawn from getting fuller.
Here is a good idea. Your crabgrass will die in the first frost but the other grass can survive and the roots can/will grow during the winter. Fall is the BEST TIME to plant grass. Run to your local supply store and pick up good seed and starter fertlizer. I've had good luck with Lesco seed and some luck with Scotts seed. Put it down now and try to keep it a little damp. You're basically overseeding here. If you want it to work well, aerate the soil and/or break up any packed down soil with a rake and lightly rake in the seed. I did this last fall which was my first year in my current house. The lawn has filled in enough that I will be able to put crabgrass control down. I usually put the crabgrass control fertilizer down the first week of march at my old home. This year I did not because I was too skimpy with the seed last fall. I've been seeding for about two weeks and will finally be able to put the crabgrass control down next march.
Some background;
Folks that have a sparse lawn (or mostly crabgrass) that put crabgrass control down the next year will still have a sparse lawn because it will keep good grass from germinating too. Then it will be really sparse and your topsoil could get rinsed away. If your lawn is think and health enough it will keep the crabgrass at bay. You should still pluck any that you see if any appears in late summer by the way.
I hope this helps,
Bill
