I'll echo this sentiment - Carrol Shelby once said the best way to improve a car's handling, was to put better tires on it (That's not an exact quote - but you get the meaning). Performance tires will give you a better handling response, more cornering ability, improved braking, etc... I even advocate choosing a slightly wider tire (if stock is 205 mm wide, you should easily be able to bump up to 215 mm wide). That seems to be a minimal difference, but you will see marked improvement in your car's behavior. This type of change will cause your speedo to be inaccurate, but no more the 1.5 - 2% at most.
Check out http://www.tirerack.com Even if you're not comfortable buying over the internet, the info they can provide will help you when going into the retailer you choose. You can search by the exact model vehicle you have or by tire size, and it will give you the choices available by tire type (performance, touring, etc..) or by manufacturer. There are even user reviews of most tires for you to make a more informed decision, and you will also have a better idea of the cost you will incur.
Keep in mind that all of the cars power, braking, grip, are transmitted through your tires. make a good, educated choice and you'll enjoy your car even more.
