I beg to differ. As we say in Greece, "we're not poor for little money, we're poor for big money". A super efficient gas heat system will save money, but not if the price has gone up *several times* since 2000. How do I know? I have one (two actually).

We live in a very large 3-level 4 year old custom house that has zoned heat, by a pair of 94% efficient variable speed furnaces (Heil 94V). The house is all brick, super-insulated, Pella windows, the works. Guess what... We still get car payment sized gas bills. We bought a pair of smart radiators (electic) and adjusted the gas heat down a bit. The radiators run $10/each a month, and save us several times that in gas costs. This winter we're expanding to more.

If I had to do this again I would not install a gas heat system again. Here in Indiana, the gas company has carte blanche in terms of rate hikes, while the electric company is more restrained (8% yearly). In 2000 we were paying something like 3-4 dollars a Therm, now we're headed to 12. You can increase efficiency all you can, but it's not going to drop your bills if the price of gas doubles every other year.

My electric bill for last month was $100... with no A/C it's around $60-70, so you figure $30-40 a month to cool a Walmart sized building (SEER 14.0 A/C's)
