The purpose of this communication is to give you some more details on the optional hands-free phone preparation available on 2005 9-3 models. This is part of either the Premium Package (Linear), Driver's Package (Arc) or Touring Package (Aero).

If you are not sure if a particular vehicle has this feature, an easy way to check is by squeezing the shark-fin antenna housing to see if there is a cell antenna inside the outer rubber cover. All 9-3 sedans have a shark-fin on the roof even if there is no phone preparation. In these cases, the outer rubber cover will squeeze together or bend easily. For convertibles, only those with the phone preparation will have the shark-fin antenna mounted on the trunk lid.

The phone preparation includes the following:
External shark-fin antenna
Microphone in the overhead console
Multi-pin connector in the center console behind the storage area
Associated wiring that links these components to each other

Note that the coax cable for the roof/trunk antenna is not part of the vehicle's multi-pin connector or accessory harness 12 801 584. It is a separate cable also located in the forward center console area. This cable needs to be connected separately to the phone cradle in order to enable the roof/trunk mounted antenna.

Important note: This is not a Bluetooth wireless installation. This feature requires a physical connection between the cell phone and the vehicle's electrical and audio systems. Bluetooth technology is not available on Saab cars sold in the U.S. market.

This feature will allow use of a cell phone via the car's audio system. The following functions are enabled after installing a cell phone.
When an incoming call is detected, the audio system will be muted
The driver must press the normal "answer" button on their cell phone keypad to connect the call
The driver can then converse using the overhead microphone to speak and listen through the audio system speakers
End the call by pressing the normal "end call" button on the cell phone keypad
The audio system will resume playing as before the incoming call

The listening volume of the conversation can be adjusted with the volume controls on the steering wheel or the knob on the radio. Please note that neither the Phone, Press To Talk (PTT) buttons or the number keypad on the radio head unit (ES2 or ES3) have any function with this phone installation.

In order to utilize the hands-free feature, a few additional parts need to be installed. The following items can be found in "The Saab Accessories Catalog"
cradle mounting bracket (this is not the electrical phone cradle, just a mounting bracket for one)
connector harness
Description Part Number Comment
Cradle Mount 12 787 239 Gray interior
Cradle Mount 12 791 202 Parchment interior
Connector Harness 12 801 584
Installation instructions can be found on IRIS in the Parts & Accessories Reference Library under the heading, "Accessory Installation Instructions". These instructions cover different models and model years. Please read them carefully and find the correct application (Saab 9-3 M03-) which begin on page six of the instructions.

In addition to these components, it will be necessary to install a cradle (including interface) between the customer's cell phone and the vehicle. The information and specifications for these items will need to be obtained from the manufacturer of the cell phone.

In order for the hands-free system to operate in the manner described above, the interface from the phone manufacturer must provide the following connections that can be connected to the connector harness 12 801 584:
1. Negative (-) Ground
2. Battery (+) (for charging phone when ignition off)
3. Ignition switch (+) (for triggering the phone to turn on when car started)
4. Grounded (-) mute signal (important to mute radio to allow phone audio to be played through vehicle sound system)
5. Audio output (+) signal
6. Audio output (-) signal
7. Microphone (+) circuit
8. Microphone (-) circuit

Below is the pin-out chart from the installation instructions. The wire colors are included here to make identifying each pin easier.

Pin number Wire Color Description
1 Black Ground
4 Yellow Mute
7 Blue/White Line output ground
9 Green Microphone ground
10 Blue/Red 12V (+15) key controlled voltage
11 Red 12V (+30) power supply
14 Orange Microphone low level output
16 Gray/White Line output signal
18 Brown/Gray Microphone high level output
