Greetings to Drew and Dave, and everyone in Houston. I hope all is well. Since I watch weather for a living (aircraft dispatcher) I can tell you I had the window measurements and Plylox count in my wallet since Katrina and fully intended to buy everything last weekend - what a mistake it was to wait. I was off work Wednesday and spent four hours waiting in line at Lowe's for plywood, then groceries -what was left, and gas -line six deep with 30 minute wait at the only one of 8 stations we passed that had gas left. Hwy 6 a slow parking lot by Wednesday p.m. and total gridlock after that. I spent all day Thursday prepping the house after seeing the turn of Rita to the northeast. That night we did the math - 5.5 million people / over half trying to evac with not one, but both OR ALL of their vehicles / limited escape routes / hot temperatures / hot tempers / runs on banks, food, gas, batteries, radios, water / did I mention one of the highest guns per capita in the nation? / = thanks but we'll hunker down. The worst part was we have an exposed north and east wall on the house. AND THE RESULT...............(drum roll).....barely enough rain to soak the lawn!
OK, the wind gusted to 50kts overnight and we lost power for six hours.
Lessons learned - On wide windows you need 3/4 plywood, Plylox are a great invention -WAY OVERPRICED at $30.00 for 20 and worth 3X that in a panic! Need to rotate D batteries. Gotta buy a good first aid kit and more gas cans. Amazed at how many household items can store water! Stop watching the news channels after 6 hours! Generator ---maybe. Knock a few pickets out of a wooden fence to relieve wind pressure. Cut a few small holes in plywood window covers for viewing, daylight and general sanity. Must better organize and set up "safe room" in the house. Gotta buy that C. Crane wind-up radio. An evacuated city is very peaceful place!
