Yes, it is a Chayka. However, Chayka GAZ-13 was never based on a Lincoln. The design of the exterior was inspired by 1955 Packard Patrician-400 (and the Packard Caribbean for the convertible version). The X-shaped frame was based on the idea first used on 1957 Cadillacs. The car had many advanced features for its time, such as an overhead valve V-8. In total, about 2000 copies of this 7-seater were made over the 20 years of production (1959-1979). In 1979, new Chayka GAZ-14 replaced GAZ-13 on the assembly line.
The huge automotive works in the city of Nizhniy Novgorod (formerly Gorky) is still called GAZ (Gorky Automotive Works). The modern company is living through some rough times. It makes several models of midsize car called Volga, which used to be very popular with taxi companies (remember Bourne Supremacy?) The car has archaic construction with solid rear axle and leaf springs. GAZ also makes some of the most popular light trucks in Russia called Gazelle and Sobol. Unfortunatelly, now it is far more profitable to pump oil out of Russia than it is to make cars...
The original GAZ factory was built with the assistance of Ford Motor Company. Ford also provided the license and technology to make the first GAZ truck (GAZ-AA) and car (GAZ-A). The huge factory was built in only 18 months, largely thanks to excellent planning and engineering support of Ford Motor Company. The first GAZ-AA was built on January 29, 1932.
