They all have metal cases, and the early ones would show a fingerprint; not so now. The Canon images are great, and the battery life is respectable. And one can carry it in a pocket, and THEN ACTUALLY USE IT while your clunky old SLRs stay on the closet shelf. The down side is that the Elph's are all automatics. While they can be "influenced" by a scad of menus, such as ASA selectin or automatic, focus assist light or not, flash on/off/automatic, red eye reduction on or off, etc., they do not have traditional manual controls for exposure or focus. So, if at the wedding reception there is a candelabra between you and Aunt Alice, the candelabra will be in precise focus, but not Aunt Alice. It does have an optical viewfinder which adjusts with the zoom of the lens; optical is best for low light and for action shots where the view screens will be dark or be behind the action. The shutter, like most point and shoots is never instant; quicker when there are fewer things to process, such as focus assist off, red eye reduction off, etc. So, while I love it and use it, I just bought a digital SLR which is clunky, nearly instant, can be focused and controlled manually, and which still costs too freaking much. If you want a good point and shoot, few if any will make a better pic than the Elph. There are a few small ones out there with manual controls, a SONY maybe? Casio makes keyboards, right? There are good and highly detailed reviews at http://www.steves-digicams.com/ http://www.dpreview.com/ and http://www.dcresource.com/ among others.
