All red rear lights are done only for apparent aesthetics, in my opinion. Personally I find taillights with clear division of function and color much more attractive, besides being much more useful. I also think side blinkers should come on many more cars, at least be an option if not an outright requirement.
But on the other hand, it would be far safer if people actually USED their turn signals, not to mention looked before they changed lanes. If both of those things took place, there would be far less of an issue with the lights themselves.
